Today’s Google Search Trends: Lipstick and Other Diversions

Today in the New York Times, Barack Obama is quoted as saying:

“We have real problems in this country right now and the American people are looking to us for answers, not distractions, no diversions, not manipulations.”

Ohhh, Mr. Obama, I beg to differ. The American people seem to have a bottomless appetite for distraction and diversions. Let’s have a look at the political searches people are searching for this day (Google Hot Trends):

  • mccain lipstick ad
  • lipstick on a pig origin
  • obama lipstick
  • biden wheelchair
  • oprah boycott
  • 57 states
  • matt damon palin

Matt Damon? Huh?? Let’s take a closer look and see what a couple of these are about:

  • “biden wheelchair” is a reference to a gaffe in which Joe Biden asks a man in a wheelchair to stand up. (He handles the awkward moment very well.)
  • “matt damon palin” refers to an interview in which the actor shares his political views. And people are listening, like, why?
  • The Oprah boycott was called upon by GOP women, because Oprah won’t make an exception to her official decision not to interview candidates on her show, in order to have Sarah Palin on the show.
  • and “57 states” refers to a video from several months ago when Obama misspoke and said he had campaigned in “57″ rather than “47″ states.

And he thought we had more important things to worry about!

Matt Damon says if you look up the actuarial tables there is a one in three chance that McCain will die within the next four years.

Damon then boldly challenges us to “do the actuarial tables”.

    Well, I did…and Damon is off…WAY off.

The actuarial tables supplied by the U.S. government indicate a one in seven chance, NOT a one in three chance.

    Take a look at http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/STATS/table4c6.html

If you add up the four years for males from ages 72 to 75 you get 0.151985 which translates to about 1/7th or one in 7.

thought the whole biden – graham incident was a bit unfortunate but you gotta chuckle. if it were in the movies you’d be rolling laughing. this political cartoon takes it to a whole new level.
