Google Hot Trends for October 7th, post debate at about 9:55 PT include a host of new searches related to the infamous “that one” comment by McCain:
- that one
- mccain that one
- mccain calls obama that one
- that one debate
Ouch – that one’s gonna hurt. I think it’s pretty obvious that McCain was just saying “that guy,” and not purposely sending a coded message to racists in the audience. (Decide for yourself: here’s the video)
Although I’m sure the pundits will stay stuck on “that one,” I’m moving on, to two interesting phrases used this evening, both of which have showed up in the Hot Trends tonight:
- cool hand at the tiller
- green behind the ears
The first expression was used by McCain in the debate, suggesting that he would be the coolest leader on the stage. In case you’re wondering about the meaning, the tiller is a part of a boat that is used to control the rudder.
The second one probably needs no explanation – it looks like a goofy combination of “green” and “wet behind the ears”. Obama used it, saying,
Now Senator McCain suggests that somehow, you know, I’m green behind the ears, and I’m just spouting off and he’s somber and responsible…
Looks like two new expressions were coined tonight! Congrats, McCain and Obama, because everything else about the debate was pretty sleepy.
