Tuesday Google Searches: Economy Tanking and Sarah Palin Tanning

Today’s search trends could be a study in the bipolar mood of our country: stressed and anxious about the economy on the one hand, and blissfully absorbed in the trivialities of life on the other.

A big chunk of the Google Hot Search trends today relate in some way to the economy, for example:

  • constellation energy
  • fed rate cut
  • federal reserves
  • hank greenberg
  • fed meeting
  • washington mutual bankrupt
  • aig stock price
  • aig bailout
  • fed announcement

On the other hand, there’s no shortage of the goofy, the entertaining, and the downright time-wasting searches. For example:

  • olivia wilde pics
  • biggest loser (that’s weight, not the stock market)
  • gq magazine
  • elizabeth banks
  • nfl week 3 pick
  • griffin guess
  • zune games

But the search that really jumped out at me today? “Sarah Palin Tanning Bed.” Seriously, will these searches ever stop being so amusing? The story behind this one is the fact that Ms. Palin installed a tanning bed in the Governor’s mansion in Alaska – at her own expense. Bloggers are gleeful, Obama’s ignoring it, and campaign spokespeople are working on a Vitamin D spin.
