Inauguration Day Google Search Behavior

It’s no surprise that inauguration-related searches are dominating Google’s “Hot Trends” in search on this day, January 20, 2009, the day that Barack Obama took the oath of office for President of the United States of America.

Naturally, I’m seeing searches for terms such as “inauguration website,” “inaugural poem,” and “watch inauguration live online.”

But there are a few unexpected searches, too.  How about “negro national anthem“?  This is the name of the song that you may know by some of its words:

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

I see, as well, searches for “chappaquiddick” and “mary jo kopechne,” both searches that seem to pop up any time Ted Kennedy is in the news.  I’m always surprised to see these; I would think that everyone with an interest in this topic would already have found all the information there is to peruse on the internet.

Plus there’s a huge interest in the inauguration day menu!  Speaking at the inaugural luncheon, Dianne Feinstain mentioned that the menu page is the most visited page on the Inaugural website. And two of the hottest searches this evening were: “inauguration recipes” and “inaugural luncheon menu.”  So, since this information is apparently important to our nation, here it is:

First Course: Seafood Stew paired with Duckhorn Vineyards, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

Second Course: A Brace of American Birds (pheasant and duck) served with Sour Cherry Chutney and Molasses Sweet Potatoes paired with Goldeneye, 2005 Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley

Third Course: Apple Cinnamon Sponge Cake and Sweet Cream Glace´paired with Korbel Natural “Special Inaugural Cuvee” California Champagne.
