Do Google search trends indicate voter preferences? I’m guessing they do. At the very least, you can be sure that Google searches indicate the public’s level of interest and curiosity about a candidate.
I looked at search trends over the last 90 days for these three likely presidential contenders’ names:
- mitt romney
- michelle bachmann
- rick perry
I would have liked to only use the last names, but “perry” is too commonly searched for other reasons, so I used full names instead. This probably skewed these results against Bachmann and Romney, who are more likely to be searched for using their last names only. The state results show some differences, as you can see here:
